Last week I got this wild hair to make Valentines Day pancakes. I know a lot of bloggers do it and I thought, heck, this is easy. Not even I can screw this up.
I told myself that not only was I going to make Valentines day pancakes but I am going to take it a step further and make Valentines Day Syrup too!
Visions of beautifully draped rainbow syrups were dancing in my head as I imagined the cascade of a perfect rainbow dripping to the plate.
Let’s just say…no.
Instead I ended up with pancakes that looked like they belonged on the set of the Walking Dead.
See:
Maybe pink and red are not always the perfect mixture.
Not that Phoenyx minded:
Back to the drawing board and far, far away from red syrup with pink pancakes.
I had much better success with a variety of colored pancakes, which you can duplicate by adding your favorite food dyes right in the mix. I used cookie cutters to cut out butter shapes and pancake hearts.
Of course my second attempt at rainbow syrup wasn’t much better, but at least this time it didn’t look like a murder scene.
If you want to try your hand at rainbow syrup, of which you can alter the colors for your own special holiday or birthday, just use clear Karo Syrup and add in your dye. If you do attempt it, please send me a shot so I can share!
Good luck!

What a cute idea!! I think both options are adorable!!
I love those colors, and I love the heart shaped butter!!!!
Love these. I’m thinking a color matching breakfast for my toddler’s next birthday instead of cake.
That picture of Phoenyx is freaking HILARIOUS! These are so cute!
Those pancakes are so cute! I’ve heard of using food coloring on pancakes, but haven’t done it myself. That is a neat idea for Valentine’s Day.
These are beautiful! Looks like something fun to make when my daughter’s have friends sleep over.
Definitely trying this recipe with my kids. Thanks, Trisha! How are you??? 🙂
Well its clear that they were amazing based on Phoenyx’s response!
I love the second try – the star shaped butter is the perfect topper!
I think the first ones were adorable, too. I only shuddered when I saw Phoenyx eating them with a white shirt on. 🙂 #firstworldlaundryproblems
