Melting Crayon Pumpkin Decorating Tutorial
Melted Crayon Tips: Remember that working with heated up wax can be dangerous and VERY messy. This is a fun craft for kids and adults but requires supervision and preparation. A blow dryer will blow melted crayons away from the pumpkin (shown on the bottom). So be careful and cover your area well. As for the heat gun, turn it on low and make sure you don’t burn your pumpkin. Also most pumpkins come with lines and side indentations. This means two rounds of crayons will likely need to be done on the top in order to really cover it well. In the case below, we did one round on the bottom of melted crayons, then once dry, did two rounds on the top. This will provide the most vivid pumpkin. Lastly, use a reusable pumpkin so you can KEEP it for decoration the following year!
To make your melted pumpkin, you will need the following items:
- Tacky Glue
- Faux 9″ pumpkin
- Crayons
- Utility Knife
- Hair Dryer or Heat Gun
- optional: small glass bowl, wrapped in plastic wrap.
How to make melted crayon pumpkin
This is a MESSY CRAFT. Do this outside or in a well covered area. You cannot control the wax flying when using a heat gun and especially a blow dryer.
Use a utility knife and carefully slice away the wrapper of the crayons.
Remove the wrapper and discard.
Break crayons in half.
Place pumpkin, upside down onto the bowl, so the stem fits into the bowl and the pumpkin stands upright on the flat surface.
Use tacky glue to glue crayons to the pumpkin.
Let dry completely.
Place newspaper on a flat surface and place the pumpkin (in the bowl) on the newspaper.
Use a hair dryer to melt the crayon onto the pumpkin.
Let set for wax to harden.
Flip the pumpkin upright and glue crayons onto the top using tacky glue.
Let dry completely.
Place pumpkin onto a surface covered with newspaper and use a blow dryer or heat gun to melt the wax.
For more color, add another set of crayons to the top, angling them and attaching them with tacky glue.
Repeat the melting process with a blow dryer and let set until wax is hard.
