This unicorn poop parfait is actually made with sweetened condensed milk and jello gelatin so while it looks like pudding, it really is more reminiscent of a panna cotta! Jello cups are so fun to make and work in every type of dessert situation. By simply changing the color and flavor, you can have red and green Christmas Jello Layers, Candy Cane Layers, or like we did here, Unicorn Poop, which is perfect for a birthday party that needs a little bit of color!
Panna Cotta
Panna Cotta is a really Delicious, rich Italian dessert where gelatin and sweetened cream and flavors are added together. Many people top their panna cotta with fruit and it really is a treat. This Jello gelatin dessert LOOKS like pudding but I assure you it is not. It’s made similarly (and tastes similar) to the panna cotta but instead of cream, uses a sweetened condensed milk and is combined with flavored gelatin.
You can choose your gelatin flavors, although I would stick to flavors similarly tasted when the color is seen.
For example, Pick a blueberry for the blue portion of the jello and a grape of the purple. No one wants to bite into blue and taste an orange flavor. Messes you up!
If you love parfaits, you really should also try this Cheerio Parfait Recipe! So cute!
Unicorn Parfait
Named “unicorn” after the blue, purple and scattered sprinkles, this parfait could have easily have been called Galaxy. Regardless of the name, its a delicious creamy dessert. If you are doing a whole tray of unicorn desserts, make sure you add Unicorn Poop Ice Cream and Unicorn Poop Muddy Buddies to the mix.
- 2 small boxes of flavored gelatin (JELLO)
- 2 1/2 cups water, divided in half
- 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk, divided in half (1/4th cup per color)
- 1 large tub Cool Whip, Extra Creamy
- 4 – 9 oz clear plastic cups
- Food dye to enhance colors (optional)
Natural Flavor Gelatins
Many people do not like dyes in their gelatin. You can get natural gelatin and use natural dyes if you prefer, but your colors may not be as bright as they are here in these Unicorn Poop Parfaits.
How to make a Parfait
In a small pot bring half the water to a boil and remove from heat.
Whisk the gelatin powder into the water for 1 minute and set aside to cool for 40 minutes.
You need to completely cool down your gelatin before adding your next step or your milk could curdle.
Once cooled, whisk 1/4th cup of condensed milk into the pot and pour into the cups in equal portions (if you want to see how to layer your jello in an angle, please scroll below for a tutorial), setting each layer for 2-3 hours in the fridge before moving on.
How to make Layered Jello
Making jello layers is actually pretty easy, but it does take time and patience. To keep colors from blending in your jello cups, you will need to make sure you set each layer for approximately 2 hours before pouring a new color.
Please read carefully on how to make these jello cups so you do not curdle your milk or blend your layers. While it does take some prep, the results are beautiful and kids love diving into their own personal cup of dessert.
Layering Jello Instructions
Follow these instructions AFTER you have your cooled colors per the recipe above.
Cut a 6″ piece of foil in half and crumple loosely.
Place into a muffin tin, on one side and place the cup in the tin/on the foil.
You may have to press the cup into the tin to sit an an angle.
Once it’s set it should stay fine.
With the cups in the muffin tin pour the jello into the cup and let set for about 3-4 hours.
Refrigerate for at least 2 hours between colors hours, until the Jello has set.
Repeat the same steps with the other flavors of gelatin and refrigerate over night.
Top with a big dollop of Cool Whip and garnish with sprinkles.
Remove cups from pan and add in the remaining color and refrigerate until set another 3-4 hours.
Top with cool whip and sprinkles.

Jello Desserts
Of course a traditional Jello Parfait is just as beautiful and is a slightly different dessert. This recipe (also on MomDot) was made in gorgeous rainbow colors and is a striking display that adults and kids both love. Click on the image to read this recipe!

If you’re looking for an easy and edible Halloween project for the kids this year then you’ll definitely want to make these creamy candy corn Jello cups. They look like candy corn, even get dressed up like candy corn but don’t taste like it at all … which is especially nice for folks that really don’t care for the candy corn flavor.
It looks like pudding but these yellow, orange and white desserts are actually made out of Jello and an extra ingredient to give them a more solid color and creamy flavor. We used this same recipe above with orange and lemon gelatin to create these candy corn jello cups. Just follow same recipe with flavor substitution and top with candy corns for a fall friendly Halloween dessert combination!
