Sticky Spicy Chicken Wings Recipe

When deciding what kind of wings to make, I’m always plagued by the decision: sticky or spicy?

I love the sweetness of a delicious sticky chicken wing, but the depth of flavor and heat of a spicy chicken wing is also a personal favorite – so I decided to create the ultimate mash-up with these Sticky Spicy Chicken Wings. The flavor is unbelievable: sweet and spicy chicken wings with a luscious, sticky sauce that you can’t help but lick off your fingers.

These wings are perfect for real foodies or just casual entertaining – they have unbelievable layers of flavor while being super simple to whip up.

I recently made these sticky spicy chicken wings for a family get-together.

Ever since I became a mom, I’ve started experiencing heartburn regularly. I was hoping it would go away eventually, but after almost seventeen and a half years – it looks like it’s here to stay.

Heartburn is terrible. I feel miserable and just want to go lie down. As much as I would prefer to be having fun with the kids and joining in on whatever antics they get up to, my discomfort makes even the thought of moving unbearable – especially after eating spicy foods.

I’ve had to figure out a solution so that I can keep up with my kids and be a fun mom – not the grouchy mom who is laid up on the couch with heartburn.

I have tried a lot of different things, both at-home remedies and over-the-counter medications, in search of relief from my heartburn.  While meandering down the pharmacy section during my most recent weekly Target getaway spree, one sentence seemed to jump out at me, capturing my interest immediately: Orally Disintegrating Tablet.  You mean I don’t have to have a glass of water with me to take this pill, I just place it under my tongue and move on? No chewing either? Considering how difficult it can sometimes be for me to have water on hand as I juggle the activities of my kids, my family, and myself, it feels as if this Up & Up Omeprazole Orally Disintegrating Tablet (also referred to as ODT) is the solution I have been searching for.

It works like the Omeprazole tablet currently available, offering 24-hour relief, but in a new, easy-to-take form! The strawberry flavor is pleasant and subtle,  while the MELTech™ technology allows the tablet to dissolve on my tongue quickly, so I can get back to having fun with the kids.  Disclaimer: Use as directed for 14 days to treat frequent heartburn (occurring 2 or more days a week).  May take 1-4 days for full effect.  Not intended for immediate relief. If you are using for more than 14 days, please consult a doctor first.

Buying it at Target also helps me get me back to my kids quickly, since it is conveniently placed between the grocery section and checkout lines, near the front, instead of opposite corners of the store.  While it doesn’t happen often, because I love to peruse when I go to Target, I can be in and out in a hurry if I need to quickly restock my heartburn solution.

Now back to those spicy wings!

Ingredients for Sticky Spicy Chicken Wings

  • 2 pounds chicken wings
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • 3 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 4 Tbsp sugar
  • 4 Tbsp water
  • 2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp sriracha, or more to taste
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
  • White sesame seeds, optional garnish
  • Chopped green onion, optional garnish

Tip: For the best flavor, I like to make half of the sauce in advance and marinade the chicken wings overnight. Leave out the garlic, as it can burn in the oven.

How to Make Spicy Chicken Wings

Season the chicken wings with salt and pepper.

In a measuring cup or small bowl, combine:

  • 1 1/2 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1/2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • 2 Tbsp water
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp sriracha

Pour over the chicken wings and toss to coat. Let marinade in the fridge overnight, or at least one hour.

Preheat oven to 450ºF

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and place the marinaded chicken wings on the parchment paper, at least 2 inches apart.

Bake the wings for 30 minutes, until they are crisp and cooked through. An internal meat thermometer should read 165ºF

In a small saucepan, combine the remaining ingredients (soy sauce, vinegar, sugar, water, sesame oil and garlic). Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, for 4 minutes or until sticky and the liquid coats a spoon.

Toss the baked chicken wings in the homemade sticky sauce and then transfer to a plate.

Garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions.
