So a few weeks ago my daughter mentioned that she’d like to make some brownies for a friend whose dog had just passed away. She told me he had done the same for her when we lost our dog back during Thanksgiving break. I thought it was such a sweet gesture from him and I loved that she wanted to return it.
Just one problem.
As I mentioned, we recently moved. Do you think I had any idea where any of our brownie mix was in our new house?
I’ll answer that for you. No. The answer is no, I did not.
So I decided to help her do something that I hadn’t done in years. I told her we were going to make homemade milk chocolate brownies. Homemade. From scratch. Old fashioned. All that jazz! And it turned out to be awesome.
And I knew I had to share the recipe with you just in case you ever find yourself in a similar predicament. Or if you just have a hankering for homemade milk chocolate brownies instead of ones from a box (although I definitely love those too – you can’t go wrong with brownies).
Here are just a few things you should know. These brownies are slightly more cake-like rather than fudge-like. I love brownies both ways, but I just wanted to you to be informed in case you’re craving ooey-gooey ones instead. One of the things I love about these brownies is that they are thick. The recipe makes a lot and even when you put them in a larger pan there is more than enough – these aren’t spread thin! Also, these have a lighter milk chocolate flavor, they are really yummy alone, but because the milk chocolate isn’t overpowering they are great to have with frosting or powdered sugar on top. No worries about them being too rich to even enjoy. Which could be a good thing or a bad thing – I have a hard time stopping myself from eating the whole pan!
And with that, let’s get on to the baking!
HOMEMADE MILK CHOCOLATE BROWNIES
Ingredients
- Sugar
- Eggs
- Cocoa
- Butter
- Vanilla
- Flour
First, melt your butter in a small saucepan.
Second, add the cocoa.
Stir until completely dissolved and then let the mixture cool.
While you’re melting the butter and cocoa you can work on the batter. Crack your eggs into the mixer.
Add in the sugar and vanilla and cream together.
Now with your mixer going pour in the chocolate from the saucepan.
Helpful hint: It’s very important that you pour this in slowly while the mixer is mixing. Make it a tiny drizzle. Be patient! If you dump it all in at once there is a very good chance the warm chocolate will cook the eggs in the batter and that’s not what we’re going for here!
Then add in the flour and mix everything together.
Pour the batter into a greased 13×9 inch pan.
Bake for 30 minutes in a 350 degree oven.
Let it cool – if you can! And then serve plain, dusted with powdered sugar, or covered in frosting.
